Alaska is on the front lines of climate change impacts and climate change causes. Let's make it ground zero for solutions!
The Alaska Climate Action Network (Alaska CAN!) is a group of residents who came together to work on climate change solutions.
Scientists have been shouting from the rooftops for decades about the imperative to reduce our emissions. Many tactics have been tried, and failed. It's clear that nobody is coming to save us - if we want to see solutions, it's up to us to make it happen.
Moreover, while people often frame climate change as something that affects the future, the truth is that climate change is already here. We are feeling the effects now, and if we want to prevent catastrophic instability, we need to act NOW.
The good news is that we've reached a social tipping point. People all around the world are feeling the effects of super-storms, droughts, and cycles out of sync. People all over the world want a better future for their children and are coming to see that a better future is possible.
When we launched this group, we expected some criticism for talking about climate change our oil-producing state. What we got instead was a tidal wave of support! People came pouring out of the woodwork to say, "Thank you so much for doing this! It's long overdue!"
We are breaking the taboo and talking about climate change in an oil-producing state. Alaska CAN! is a grassroots organizing force, connecting people to the movement where they fit best. Together, we can overcome feelings of hopelessness, despair, and disempowerment to make real change.
We have the solutions we need - we just have to implement them. Alaska CAN! is driving the conversation to address the root causes of climate change. That means developing renewable energy infrastructure and reducing our emissions on par with the science for a just transition. We are focused on solutions in Alaska but coordinate with national and international efforts where it fits.
